SONIQ Glossary

Glossary for SONIQ Flatpanel TV Products

1080i
The number 1080 stands for 1080 lines of vertical resolution, while the letter i stands for interlaced or non-progressive scan.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1080P
The number 1080 stands for 1080 lines of vertical resolution, while the letter P stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10-bit Panel
Each pixel is made of three individual green, red and blue (RGB) subpixels. A display’s electronics control the intensity of each subpixel to mix an overall color for that pixel. The number of discrete levels of intensity with which each subpixel can be varied corresponds to the bit-depth of each subpixel color. A single 8-bit subpixel can produce 256 discrete levels of intensity and a 10-bit subpixel 1024 discrete levels. The combination of variations of intensity levels of individual green, red, and blue subpixels within a single pixel enables the reproduction of (256)^3 = 16,777,216 and (1024)^3 = 1,073,741,824 for 8-bit and 10-bit displays respectively.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

100Hz/ 200Hz
Conventional LCD TVs refresh the entire image at 50Hz. Unfortunately, this may result in perceptible flicker. By doubling the number of displayed frames, Quick-Motion 100Hz/200Hz reduces blur and judder and makes fast-moving scenes appear smoother, sharper and clearer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

24P Film Mode
Conventional televisions operate at 50Hz, film-makers record their films onto Blu-Ray Disc™ using 24Hz (24P). With 24P Film Mode, your SONIQ TV will automatically perceive these films and select the correct format to delivering film-like motion characteristic for you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3D Comb Filter
In signal processing, a comb filter adds a slightly delayed version of a signal to itself, causing phase cancellations. The frequency response of a comb filter consists of a series of regularly spaced spikes, so that it looks like a comb.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3D Television
A 3D television (3D-TV) is a television set that employs techniques of 3D presentation, a 3D display — a special viewing device to project a television program into a realistic three-dimensional field. There are several techniques to produce and display 3D moving pictures. The basic requirement is to display offset images that are filtered separately to the left and right eye.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Analog component video
Analog video signals (also called Component Cables) must provide red, green and blue signals to create a television image. The simplest type consists of the three discrete red, green and blue signals sent down three coaxial cables. There are a number of schemes which vary according to how synchronization is handled. If a synchronization signal is sent on the green channel, it is called sync-on-green.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Analog TV
Today's TV system using radio frequency waves to transmit and display pictures and sound.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Analog TV Tuner
Analog TV tuner will pick out specific channels by specifically concentrating on a specific MHz range of a large broadcast band. By focusing on a specific range it can pick up the video portion of a station in one section and the audio portion in another. It is not possible to transmit high definition via analog signal due to limitations on how much information can be sent with in a given time frame. Analog signals will no longer be used via Antenna. Australia will turn off analog signals between 2010 and 2013, region by region. Instead all antenna transmissions with be Digital.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aspect Ratio
Aspect ratio refers to the images height vs. the images width. The current industry standards for this are 4:3 which square and 16:9 which is more of a horizontal rectangle shape. Most all television broadcasts are 4:3 except for high definition broadcasts. Due to the resolutions required for high definition it will always be broadcast in 16:9.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brightness
The amount of light emitted from the display, measure in candela per square meter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cables Included
The in-package cables that are included within a given HDTV from SONIQ. Cables included could comprise power cords, or other connective cables.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Closed Caption (CC) or Sub-Title
Closed captioning (CC) allows deaf and hard of hearing / hearing-impaired people, people learning English as an additional language, people first learning how to read, people in a noisy environment, and others to read a transcript or dialogue of the audio portion of a video, film, or other presentation. As the video plays, text captions are displayed that transcribe, although not always verbatim, what is said and by whom and indicate other relevant sounds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coaxial Port
Coaxial port is a digital audio interface used in consumer audio equipment over relatively short distances. The signal is transmitted over a coaxial cable with RCA connector.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Color Depth
Color depth is used to describe the number of bits used in a single pixel to make up a color. The more bits per the pixel the better the transition from one color to another and help detail different shades of a specific color that are adjacent to one another.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Color Temperature
The NTSC and PAL TV norms call for a compliant TV screen to display an electrically "black-and-white" signal (minimal color saturation) at a color temperature of 6500K. On many actual sets however, especially older and/or cheaper ones, there is a very noticeable deviation from this requirement of the standard.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Contrast Ratio
The contrast ratio is a metric of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest and the darkest color the system is capable of producing. High contrast ratio is a desired aspect of any display, but with the various methods of measurement for a system or its part, remarkably different values can be measured of the same subject.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CVBS
Composite video is the format of an analog television (picture only) signal before it is combined with a sound signal and modulated onto an RF carrier. It is usually in a standard format such as NTSC, PAL, or SECAM. It is a composite of three source signals called Y, U and V (together referred to as YUV) with sync pulses. Y represents the brightness or luminance of the picture and includes synchronizing pulses, so that by itself it could be displayed as a monochrome picture. U and V between them carry the color information. They are first mixed with two orthogonal phases of a color carrier signal to form a signal called the chrominance. Y and UV are then added together. Since Y is a baseband signal and UV has been mixed with a carrier, this addition is equivalent to frequency-division multiplexing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diagonal Size
Referred also to "Diagonal Viewing Area", the diagonal size is the size of the screen measured in inches. This would be measured from the bottom left corner to the upper right corner of the screen itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Digital component video
The digital component video is sometimes referred to as 4:2:2. This means that for every 4 pixels of luminance (Y) information, only 2 pixels of Pb (Blue Difference), and 2 pixels of Pr (Red difference) are encoded. This is the scheme used for the DVD format. The numbers also represent the relative number of bits (but not the actual number) used to carry the three pieces of information at each pixel. The color information is spread across the pixels it represents.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Digital TV (DTV)
Television delivered and displayed using radio frequency waves that contain information that is digitally encoded for improved quality and efficiency.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Digital Ready labels
The Australian Government has developed a product-labelling scheme to help Australian switch to digital TV.

IPS
In-plane switching is an LCD technology which aligns the liquid crystal cells in a horizontal direction. In this method, the electrical field is applied through each end of the crystal, but this requires two transistors for each pixel instead of the single transistor needed for a standard thin-film transistor (TFT) display. Before LG Enhanced IPS was introduced in 2009, the additional transistors resulted in blocking more transmission area, thus requiring a brighter backlight, which consumed more power, and made this type of display less desirable for notebook computers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LCD
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is a thin, flat electronic visual display that uses the light modulating properties of liquid crystals.
LED-backlit LCD TV
An LED-backlight LCD TV is an LCD TV that uses LED backlighting instead of the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) used in traditional LCD televisions. It is not a true LED display but is called "LED TV" by some manufacturers. The use of LED backlighting has a dramatic impact, resulting in a thinner panel, less power consumption and heat dissipation, and a brighter display with better contrast levels.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MaxxBass™
Patented Waves MaxxBass™ psycho-acoustic bass extension delivers a more natural sound than traditional bass boost technologies, which use EQ and can overpower your system. MaxxBass™ analyzes low frequencies to create harmonics which are perceived as lower, deeper tones.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MPEG-2
MPEG-2 is typically used to encode audio and video for broadcast signals, including direct broadcast satellite and Cable TV. MPEG-2, with some modifications, is also the coding format used by standard commercial DVD movies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PDP
Plasma Display Panel is a type of flat panel display common to large TV displays. They are called "plasma" displays because the technology utilizes small cells containing electrically charged ionized gases, or what are in essence chambers more commonly known as fluorescent lamps.
Produces deep blacks allowing for superior contrast ratio
PDP Advantages: Much wider viewing angles than those of LCD; images do not suffer from degradation at high angles unlike LCDs. Less susceptible to reflection glare in bright rooms due to not needing backlighting. No visible motion blur, thanks in large part to very high refresh rates and a faster response time, contributing to superior performance when displaying content with significant amounts of rapid motion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QAM Demodulation
Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is a modulation scheme which conveys data by changing (modulating) the amplitude of two carrier waves. These two waves, usually sinusoids, are out of phase with each other by 90° and are thus called quadrature carriers - hence the name of the scheme.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution
Applies to fixed-pixel-array displays such as flat-panel plasmas (PDPs), LCDs, front and rear projectors using LCD, DLP or similar technologies and is simply the physical number of columns and rows of pixels creating the display (eg, 720x576; 1368x768; 1920x1080 etc).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
